There were many changes between 1908 and the year 2000. Towns grew into big Cities. Sports have changed over the years. The military has changed drastically. In 2000, lots of events affected our lives.

Times Square was covered with people when New Year's Eve was celebrated, because New York City was so popular. On September 11, 2001, two hijacked 747 airplanes hit the World Trade Centers in New York City. The collapse of the two towers killed over 2,000 people and affected the lives of many others. People now feared for themselves and their families with the risk of other terrorist attacks. Many people in all parts of the country are still trying to deal with the financial setbacks brought about by the attacks.

There are many sports that Americans play and watch. Some examples are basketball, baseball, football, soccer, and hockey. In the year 2000, the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA Championship and held the title through 2002. In baseball last year, the World Series pitted the Anaheim Angels against the New York Yankees. The Angels won by beat the Yankees for the first time in a long time.

Football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Football is a very aggressive team sport. Salaries now are much higher than they used to be. It's not unusual for a professional athlete to sign a multi million dollar contract.

Our country went to war in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2000 through 2003. A lot of soldiers risked their lives for our country. A lot of transportation was used in the war. Some examples are tanks, hum-v's, Blackhawks and Apaches. These were used for transportation of soldiers and supplies. Guns like the M-16's were accurate automatic weapons in the war.

Many changes happened during the 1900's. People going to war, people having to work long hours to pay for homes and buying goods for their families. In the 1900's, Georgia soldiers were in World War I and in the Battle of Somme in France. Goods were needed to survive on the battlefield. In 1917, the US joined in on World War I. They fought with many different races of soldiers and used many different types of guns. Some of the soldiers were very good with using a gun and some were not.

Some soldiers used rifles for long-range attacks and some used pistols for close range attacks. They also used machine guns, tanks and what they called "troop trucks". In the 1900's, Dr. James Naismith needed a game for students to play. He wanted a game that was aggressive but fun. He wanted a game that you could play inside when the weather was bad.

Then he had a brilliant idea. He grabbed a ladder, two blocks of wood, two peach baskets and a soccer ball. Then he put the board and the peach baskets up and he grabbed a soccer ball. He called the game basketball. In the 1900's, there was a game called baseball. The average salary of a baseball player was around $2,400.00.

Most of the players left the National League and went to the American League because of signing bonuses. The players would get additional bonuses if they won division series games, pennants and World Series Titles. Salaries have changed drastically since the 1900's. People now get paid millions of dollars to play if the owners think they are good.
